Water cools a courtyard, reflects the sky and draws birds. Even a small, still pool does all three.
Keep it shallow and still
A shallow pond is safer, easier to build and warm enough for water lilies. Still water also reflects better than moving water, which makes a tight space feel larger.
Balance sun and shade
Lilies need several hours of sun to flower, but full sun all day encourages algae. Aim to shade part of the surface with floating leaves or a nearby tree.
Make a place to pause
A bridge, a ledge or a single bench at the edge gives people a reason to stop. The pond is only as good as the place you look at it from.
